Builder grade “boob lights” are seen in almost every house I’m working in– mine especially. After 4 years in the house, I had slowly begun to switch them out. The only builder grade ones left were in the basement. I wanted something modern and came across a group of similar dome shape flush mount on pinterest. I needed 4 of them and the price just wasn’t in my budget. I looked high and low for a solid dupe and finally found the perfect alternative!
On the left was my current “boob light”. I had found these designer flush mounts ranging from $250 – $1795. Did you read that last part??? $2k for a small flush mount?? It’s beautiful… but um, that’s a no from me. Here is my version of a dupe to use! I found this light, which had such a similar shape on no other than *Amazon*, of course. And the best part…it was UNDER $20 per light!
My Amazon Light
I ordered (3) 16″ and (1) 14″ sized lights. I wanted to use the three larger ones in the main basement living area and then the smaller one for the bar area. They come completely flat white and the are LED! No replacing any more light bulbs– which I was most excited about. I cannot tell you how many times we were having to replace light bulbs in those builder grade boob lights!
Painting
First, I started by taping off the LED center so I would spray paint over them. You can cover the wiring, but I left that step out because I was really careful spraying just the exposed edges. I flipped them over and sprayed the outside with Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint in the color Flat Black.
The rust-oleum specific spray paint is my absolute favorite solely from the coverage it provides. After letting the outer black coat dry for about an hour or two, I flipped it over to spray the inside. I used Rust-Oleum Universal Aged Metallic Spray Paint in the color Vintage Gold for that portion.
After everything was dry, I installed them into place. They look A MILLION times better!!!! I am so happy with how they turned out and for under $20 per light. That’s a W in my book.
